Founded in 1887, Dunnellon, Florida, is another popular Marion County city. It grew into the 1900s as a mining town around the rainbow river (then called blue-run) which was used to transport the phosphates being mined. Dunnellon is approximately 25 miles southwest of Ocala and north of Tampa, FL. Dunnellon has several schools, including Dunnellon Elementary, Romeo Elementary, Dunnellon Middle, and Dunnellon High School. If you’re in the area, you’ll want to be sure to visit Rainbow Springs State Park, located 3 miles to the north.
